System Software, Application Software

  What is Software

As you know compider do anything without instructions from the users. In order to do any specific job you have to give a sequence of instruction to the computer. This set of instructions its called a computer program. Software refers to the set of computer programs, procedures that describe the programe how they are to be used. We can say that it is the collection of programs, which increase the capabilities of the hardware. Software guide the computer at every step where to start and stop during a particular job. The process of software development is called programming.

You should keep in mind that software and hardurare are complementary to each other. Both have to work together to produce meaningful result. Another important point you should know that producing software is difficult and expensive.

                                                           Type of Software

 A. System Software                                                                          B. Application Software

     a. operating system                                                                           a. MS Word

             i. Windows

• A computer system consists of hardware and software. The computer  hardware commot perform any task on its won. It need to be instructed about the tasts to be performed. Software is a set of programs that instructs the computers about the tasks to be performed.

                                                                 User

                                                  Application Software

                                                      System Software

Hardware                                           (up to lower and lower to up)

Types of software : Software can be broadly classified in two categories.

                                                   i. System Software

                                                  ii. Application Software

  System Software

System software provides basic functionality to the computer. System software is requisted for the working of computer itself. The user of computer does not need to be aware about the functioning of system software, while using the computer. For example, when you buy a computer, the system software would also include different device drivers. The purposes of system software are :

• To provide basic functionality to computer.

 • To control computer hardware.

• To act as an interface between user, application software and computer hardware.

                                                       System Software

For computer management                                                                         For  developing software

            operating system                                                                                       programming language

            device drivers                                                                                            Translator software

            system utilities                                                                                           linker loader

    Operating System

It is a  of programs which forms vital links between  the user and the computer hardware to control. It activates, monitors and executes the instruction on the computer. These softwares initially check the hardware components and load the related translators of files and provide some basic functions for instructions to the machine. It is a program developed by a company to control operation of a computer. This program activates the component of computer and prepare them for activates the compment of operation. There are various types of operating system used.

i. DOS (Disc operating system)

ii. Unix

iii. Lan Novell

iv. Zen ix

 v. Window - 95,98, XP, 2000. etc.

 Device Driver

A Device Driver acts as a translator between the hardware and the software that uses the devices. In other words, it  intermediates between the device and the software, in order to use the device.

Some devices that are commonly connected to the computer are keyboard, mouse, hard disk. printer, speaker, microphone, joystick, webcam, scanner digital camera, and monitor.

 System Utilities

System utility software is required for the maintenance of computer system utilites are used for supporting and enhancing the programs and the data in computer. some system utilities. may come embedded with OS and other may be added later on.

Some examples of systems utilities are

 • Anti-virus utility to sean computer for virus.

 • Data compression utility to compress the file.

 • Cryptographic utility to encrypt and decrypt fily.

 • Disk compression utility to compres contents of a disk for increasing the capacity of a disk.

 • Disk, Partitioning.

 • Disk cleaners.

 • Backup utility

 • System Profiling.

 • Network Managers,

 • Programming language. Three Type

          a. Machine language.

          b. Assembly language

          c. High level language

• Translation software The translated programm is called the object code there are three different kind of translator.

 a. Assembler

 b Compiler

 c. Interpreter

Linker : Linker is a program that links several object modules and libraries to a single executable program.

Loader : The loader software is used to load and relocate the executable program in the main memory.

 Application Software

The software that a user uses for accomplishing a specific task in the application software. Application software may be a single program or a set of programs. A set of programs that are written for of specific purpose and provide the required functionality is called software package. Application software is written for different kinds of applications - graphics, word processors, media players, database applications, telecommunication, accounting purposes etc.

Some examples of application software packagers are as follows :

• Word processing software : For writing  letter, reports, documents etc. (e.g. MS Word)

 • Image Processing software : For assisting in drawing and manipulating graphics Ce.g. Adobe Photoshop) Accounting software : For assisting in accounting information, salary, tax returns (Tally software)

 • Spreadsheet software : used for creating budget tables etc. (e.g. MS Excel)

 • Presentation software : To make presentation, slide shows (e.g. MS power point)

 • Suite of software having word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software : Some examples are MS-office, google Does, Sun openoffice Apple i work.

• CAD/CAM software : To assist in architectural design.

 • Geographic Information systems : It captures, stores, analyzes, manages. and presents data, images and maps that are linked to different location (e.g. Are GIS).

 • Web Browser Software : To access the world wide aleb to search documents. sounds, images etc. (eg. Internet  Explorer, Netscape communicator,  chrome).
